For over a decade, the computer and the Internet have co-existed in a symbiotic relationship. Computers give us a vast amount of information at our fingertips, while the Internet gives us a way to share information. It is in this relationship between the Internet and the computer that the Internet presents a dangerous potential. The Internet provides us with access to a wealth of information, much of which is beneficial. However, there are also many illegal and unethical sites on the Internet that are known to be potential problems for both children and adults.
Online crime is often hidden behind a clean and normal-looking website or "face". However, criminals can and do use the Internet as a medium to carry out illicit acts, ranging from the sale of drugs, to the dissemination of pornography, to the trading of stolen and illegal goods. These crimes can be very devastating to the community.
In order to combat the spread of crime, the Internet service providers and the government must work together to create an effective and comprehensive Internet policy. By implementing a series of education and prevention programs, we can create an Internet that is both safe and free from the threat of crimes like identity theft and cyber-bullying.
The Online Behavior Code:
A Code of Conduct for the Online Community, The Online Behavior Code is the first and only ethical code designed by an Internet user community to solve the problem of Internet crime. The Online Behavior Code was developed with the aim to improve the quality of life for the entire Internet community, without affecting the freedom of the Internet. This code promotes three principles that are designed to address a wide variety of online crime issues. These three principles are:
The First Principle: Keep Harming the Internet to a Minimum
The Second Principle: Prevent, Detect and Report Harming the Internet
The Third Principle: Respect the Freedom of Others
The Online Behavior Code is a comprehensive code and is not meant to be all-encompassing. The Code will always need to be updated and expanded, as new Internet users are ever-expanding in their knowledge of the Internet.
The first two sections of the code are dedicated to what are known as The Four Pillars of Internet Safety: Know Your Rights, Be Aware of Security, Use Media Responsibility, and Be a Volunteer.
Know Your Rights:
While on the Internet, we have certain rights which others do not. These rights are often mistaken for privileges and used to abuse the Internet. Know Your Rights section of The Online Behavior Code provides both a basic and an advanced list of rights a77f14ba26 nedbian
